| No Longer a Fear or Anxiety Going to the Dentist
Fifty percent of the population put aside Dental Care due to a high fear of dental procedures. Reasons vary from fear or phobia, bad previous experience at a dental office, difficulty getting numb, bad gag reflex, highly
sensitive teeth, or not enough time to set aside. Sedation Dentistry relieves the symptoms of fear, and, anxiety, and allows you to have your dental work completed with no memory of your visit in the dental chair.
Only specially trained dentists can provide sedation dentistry. Patients who are undergoing a sedation procedure feel drowsy, or unconscious, and experience no discomfort during the sedation visit. With sedation, more dental work can be accomplished in one visit, rather than having many office visits to accomplish the same amount of dental work. My experience is that time, and time again, sedated patients have far less discomfort and post
procedural pain, when compared to non- sedated patients undergoing the same procedures. While sedated, patients can undergo dental procedures for cleanings, implants, fillings, crown and bridgework, extractions, root canals, and gum surgery. A complete review of your health history and all medications, including natural supplements (such as ginkgo biloba, vitamin E, etc) will determine your eligibility for the sedation procedure itself.
There are several approaches to sedation dentistry available to you.
The first approach would be the use of Nitrous Oxide, or laughing gas. The laughing gas can relax you, but in my experience it does not even begin to make a dental phobic patient comfortable enough to undergo any procedure
other than maybe a simple cleaning. The laughing gas is available in every operatory in the office, so please ask for it if you are interested.
Another approach to sedation dentistry is Oral Sedation. Primarily using the drugs Halcion, Hydroxyzine and occasionally Alpralozam. Taken 60 minutes prior to the appointment these drugs work extremely well to relax the
patient and provide 99% memory loss of the dental procedure. This is the primary method of sedation in my office due to the effectiveness and safety of these drugs.
There is the option of IV Sedation available to you. I have undergone the training requirements to have been issued my comprehensive IV Sedation license, but typically choose NOT to provide this method of sedation in my
office. The oral sedation method is so effective, and with many of the procedures in my office taking several hours to complete, I the most comfortable with the oral sedation method. I have personally performed over 2,500 sedation procedures over the years, with the office total experience being over 3,500 sedation procedures. (I have two other experienced doctors who work with me)
